Faces of 409 – Mr. Sam Funk

Sam Funk, Head Custodian at Atchison Elementary School, was awarded the 2018-2019 Classified Employee of the Year Award!  Sam is a wonderful recipient of this award. Sam has been working for USD 409 for the past 16 years.  He started out as a para-educator before he moved into his role as Head Custodian.  He is also a wonderful mentor and football coach for students at Atchison High School.

In his nomination, it was said that “Sam brings his best to AES each and every day.  He leads his team with respect and humor but brings high expectations so that the building is always clean, well-maintained, and attractive for students.  Through his care, students know each and every day how much they are cared for and how important school is for them and how important they are to their school. Through his actions and friendly demeanor, he empowers students to take pride in their school facility.”

It was also said that “Sam is the epitome of a leader, he leads by example, all the time.”

Sam received his award today during Atchison Elementary School’s Opening Ceremonies and was accompanied by his wife Lydia Funk, and multiple staff members from the district!
